That Girl Can Cook

I think I've mentioned here before that PalmGirl, soon to be 14, is an aspiring chef. On Monday she got together with a friend who is home from college, and they cooked our families a feast of several courses. I took pictures of it all.

First up was bread and cheese. I never found out what kind of cheese. All that PalmGirl would tell me was that it was "stinky" cheese. All I know is that it was yummy, soft, and creamy.

Next was caprese salad, one of my summertime favorites. She said it didn't fit the French theme but that she wanted it anyway. I'm glad she did.

Next was pea soup. She and her friend were not pleased with it because they thought it called for too much mint. They cut back, but it was still minty fresh. I ate all of mine. :-)

The main course was Beef Bourguignon, roasted asparagus, and roasted potatoes. It was fantastic.

But I have to say my favorite part was dessert:

Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. They made the profiteroles and the chocolate sauce from scratch, too.

In fact, they made it all from scratch, and they managed to have it all on the table at the right time at the right temperature, which is one of the hardest parts of cooking in my opinion. All of the adults agree that they should cook together more often.

And, no, the irony is not lost on me that I just put up my weight loss post yesterday and now this. The thing is, though, feasts -- on occasion -- are a part of life. A wonderful part of life. But the occasion cannot be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, AND Sunday, and any other day that I've been stressed or feel like indulging. Moderation, right? Old me would have eaten this feast on a Monday night and then figured I'd blown the week anyway so why not eat like crazy all week. New me got up Tuesday morning, exercised, and ate right.
